Means of Transportation
On the Homepage of the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) you can find general information on travelling and means of transportation in Germany. See below for additional recommendations for Osnabrück:
Pedestrian- and Bike Paths
Osnabrück is a very pedestrian- and bike-friendly town. The foot- and bike paths as well as the multitude of green spaces make traveling by foot or by bike an attractive option. Cheap second hand bikes can be found in the ads section of the newspapers. In the internet, check out the classifieds website Heißer Draht. Sometimes, the Fundbüro (lost property office) of the City of Osnabrück auctions off used bikes. It might also be worth your time to visit the non-profit vendor Möwe.
Bus and Train
In Osnabrück, longer distances can be comfortably covered by bus.
Students at the Osnabrück Universities have free and unlimited use of public transportation within the city and into parts of the periphery; the student ID (which you receive as soon as you transfer your tuition fee) counts as a so-called Semesterticket. The Semesterticket is valid every day of the week and even during the semester breaks.
Long Distance Travel
For longer trips you can take coaches, airplanes and the long-distance trains of the Deutsche Bahn. If you book in time, it is possible to find cheap train tickets and flights. If you are flexible, you can make use of cheap last-minute offers provided by the various airlines. Students who own an International Student Identity Card (ISIC) often get reduced air fares.
If you are planning to travel by bus or by plane it is advisable to contact a Reisebüro (travel agency). See the Gelbe Seiten (Yellow Pages).
There is also the option of finding a lift by car; check the posts on the university bulletin boards, classifieds in the paper, or look up one of the so-called “Mitfahrzentralen”, agencies that arrange private lifts.
