First-year students who want to apply for an accommodation in the charming residence halls of the Studentenwerk Osnabrück (Student Services) should be prepared for a waiting period before the Studentenwerk can offer them the desired room. In the meantime, look for a room on the private housing market (addresses below).
It is not always easy to obtain a room at an affordable price. Therefore, try to come to a reasonable compromise. It does not always have to be a room with a gorgeous view which is in proximity to the university.
You should begin looking for a room as early as possible, once you have received your certification of admission. If possible, you should rent a room earlier than planned, perhaps even in the semester break. Generally, the availability of accommodations is high during the whole year, except for the beginning of the winter semester. Since demand drives up the cost of housing downtown, consider taking a room in the surrounding area to cut costs. With your student ID you can use the public transport system in Osnabrück for free!
Another possibility is that you and your friends contact Osnabrück’s landlords and property companies, who rent out bigger apartments. It could be a huge financial advantage if you live in a shared flat. If you and your friends rent an apartment, you should keep in mind that every one of you should have his or her own tenancy agreement for his or her own room.
You can also place your own ad via internet at the website of the local newspaper “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” or on the “Schwarzes Brett” (bulletin board) of the University of Osnabrück.
