General Information about the psb
- Who is the psb responsible for?

The Psychological Counseling Service (psb) is available to all enrolled students at universities and universities of applied sciences in Osnabrück, Vechta, and Lingen. Of course, international students are welcome.
- What is the difference between psychological counseling and social counseling?

Psychological counseling primarily focuses on personal concerns and/or challenges related to your studies. Social counselling supports you with practical questions regarding the organization and financing of your studies.
- Is the counseling free of charge?

Yes, the service is free of charge, as it is partly funded through the semester contribution.
- Does the psb offer counseling sessions in other languages than German?

Yes, the psb offers counselling sessions in English. Please inform us with your registration that you are asking for English counselling.
Appointments & Organization
- How do I register for a counseling session?

You can register via the secretariat – by phone, email, or in person. It is important that you schedule the appointment yourself.
- What should I do if I cannot attend an appointment?

You can cancel or reschedule your appointment by contacting the secretariat by phone or email. Please inform us as early as possible so that the appointment can be offered to other clients.
- What types of counseling formats are offered?

The psb primarily offers in-person sessions. Appointments can also take place via video call or by telephone. In addition to individual counseling, we offer couples and group counseling, as well as courses and workshops. Please note that courses and workshops are held in German.
- What can I expect in the initial consultation?

The initial consultation serves as a first assessment. You will have the opportunity to describe your experiences and concerns in a calm setting. Together, we will consider possible goals, the background of your problem and how to proceed. If necessary, a referral to another counseling services, outpatient psychotherapy, or a clinic may be made. Further appointments are arranged directly with your counselor.

- Who are the counselors in psychological counseling?

Our team consists of psychologists with various additional counseling and therapeutic qualifications.
- Can I choose whether I am advised by a woman, a man, or a specific person?

You are welcome to let us know if you would prefer to speak with a woman or a man. In general, we offer you the earliest available appointment for an initial consultation.
- Can I change my counselor?

Yes, if there are important reasons for doing so. In many cases, it is helpful to address any difficulties directly in a personal conversation and, ideally, resolve them together.

- Are the sessions confidential?

Yes, your visit to the psb and all contents of the sessions are confidential. For more information, click here.
- What is the difference between counseling and psychotherapy? Can I receive psychotherapy at the counseling center?

In psychological counseling, we support you using scientifically based methods to help you cope with your problems. It is oriented to individual needs, usually short- to medium-term and often focused on specific issues. Psychotherapy is intended to treat diagnosed mental disorders and is generally long-term. Psychotherapeutic treatment is not available at the psb.
